I love painting. And I love 3D. Naturally, I want to create some painterly-looking 3D models as well. But hand-painting the textures is not always enough. Some decent shading and post-processing can help sell the feeling too.
Here’s my first attempt at doing a painterly-looking post-processing in blender. That was a little bit before they implemented the Kuwahara filter directly into the compostor. I implemented my own and it was a nice little experiment. In fact I am still using my version since it’s not dependent on the image resolution and samples the pixels based on the image size.
This image is heavily based on the gorgeous art of Kate Fedorchuk. She is an amazing artist and one of my favorite inspirations.
And here’s the wireframe for reference. The model is quite simple. In fact I made it live on a stream in 2 hours. Implementing the Kuwahara took quite a bit longer than that.
Thank you for watching!
